ecocide

in unfortunate irony the bp oil disaster has occurred as i am currently working on a group presentation on ecocide. ecocide, in short, is ecological genocide. or as sally higgins defines -

"The extensive destruction, damage to or loss of ecosystem(s) of a given territory, whether by human agency or by other causes, to such an extent that peaceful enjoyment by the inhabitants of that territory has been severely diminished."

higgins is currently campaigning for the UN to recognize ecocide as a crime against peace, which could then be tried in the International Criminal Court (ICC), along with genocide, war crimes, crimes of aggression, and crimes against humanity.

this would be a huge step for environmental rights and the future of our world. we are now going to be seeing and suffering the effects of the bp oil rig disaster for years and years, if not forever, as i assume irreparable damage has or will be done. by criminalizing ecocide on an international level industries, corporations, governments, etc will be held more accountable for ecological destruction. i definitely support this campaign and encourage you to read the Guardian article at this link (http://tinyurl.com/yyvsonb), and to visit www.thisisecocide.com, but at the very least i ask you to watch this short video (http://tinyurl.com/yya8z54).
